Rauchbild, Otto Piene 1960

Otto Piene was one of the founders of the ZERO group. This is one of his early "Rauchbilder" created in 1960 with the smoke of a candle in his studio in the ZERO house in Düsseldorf, Germany. The red paper was glued to the larger white one by the artist himself. The work comes from the archive of fellow ZERO artist Gerhard von Graevenitz, who ran a small gallery in Munich called Nota. In 1959 Nota was one of the first galleries to exhibit works by Otto Piene.
