Rare TC4 light object, Aldo van den Nieuwelaar 1969
Aldo van den Nieuwelaar's work is hard to classify; is it design, or art? The TC series was first shown in Gallery Swart, which had represented important members of the abstract geometric art movement like Francois Morellet and later Ad Dekkers. The series was created in a strict three dimensional grid, predetermined by the standard sizes of fluorescent light bulbs. Thereby van den Nieuwelaar eliminated his own artistic, arbitrary choices. The design is systematic and comprehensive. In that sense the TC4 is one of the clearest of the series.
Only 16 white versions of the TC4 were ever produced. This one comes from the artists own household.
We are proud to announce that we have provided the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston with a TC6 by van den Nieuwelaar. It will be on show later this year.
