Rare bakelite Fruitbowl, Louis Kalff (attr.) for Philips 1930
It doesn't get more "modernist" than this. Geometric functionalism with the highly innovative material "Bakelite".
Philips was the first and only producer of bakelite in the Netherlands before WW2. They called it Philite, because the name Bakelite had been patented. In 1930 Philips developed the first household products with philite. It is safe to presume Louis Kalff, as the creative director of Philips, designed most of them. This fruitbowl was shown on the cover of the first catalogue of those products in 1931. It clearly shows the belief in modenity, expressed through the functional application of platonic geometry.
This is a very rare bowl in a beautiful condition with only a tiny bruise on the edge. I could not find a second one on the whole internet
