Aldo van den Nieuwelaar’s approach to design was uncompromising and systematic. His work is closely related to the concrete geometric art of the late 1960’s and 1970’s. In fact it is often difficult to categorise it as art, or design. The “Disk” from 1974 is no exception. This is not just a lamp with a flat round shade. It represents the abstract idea of a circle. The circle pivots on a vertical axis. Changing it’s position in three dimensional space. Turn it on and the light will make it something more than material, bringing it even closer to the abstract realm of spatial math.
