Disk floor lamp, Aldo van den Nieuwelaar 1974
Aldo van den Nieuwelaar’s approach to design was uncompromising and systematic. His work is closely related to the concrete geometric art of the late 1960’s and 1970’s. In fact it is often difficult to categorise it as art, or design. The “Disk” from 1974 is no exception. This is not just a lamp with a flat round shade. It represents the abstract idea of a circle. The circle pivots on a vertical axis. Changing it’s position in three dimensional space. Turn it on and the light will make it something more than material, bringing it even closer to the abstract realm of spatial math.
The Disk was only produced in small numbers. This is a rare original from the 1970’s. It iremains in a very good condition. Only the black paint shows a little erosion. The acrylic shade is still perfect. The light effect is beautiful.
