Antique "Ammensessel" by Thonet, 19th century

Probably the most adorable chair I have seen. So small and elegant, yet so history laden.

This is the Thonet "Ammensessel", a low arm chair designed specifically for women who would breastfeed other people's children for a fee, which was still a profession in the 19th century. Thonet made a chair that was affordable enough for the Amme to have a seat of her own. A small and very low chair, easy to carry around, it probably made her job easier, but it also expressed her status in the family she worked for.

This chair has the embossed Thonet logo that was used until 1881, which is very rare. The label is also still present, but has faded. The webbing is in a very good shape. It is woven by hand in the old fashion way (no prefab matting). A few screws are not original.

This is an historic piece with a beautiful patina
