Folding Arm Chairs VF3, Gijs Bakker 1976
A rare set of two model VF3 chairs by Gijs Bakker, one of the most influential Dutch designers of the late 20th century. The chairs are constructed from a single circle, cut up in parts and rearranged to create a surprisingly comfortable seat.
As the Vitruvius man by Leonardo da Vinci already demonstrates, the human body relates to a circle. Gijs Bakker has proven that this is still the case in a seating position. One can even fold the circular parts together to store the chair (also practical for shipment). The chairs are in a good condition with some user marks on the wood as can be seen in the pictures. It's a brilliant design, but only around 100 pieces were ever produced. Some with a wicker seat and some like these two beauties; with woven seatbelt straps.
