Rare 1st edition Domus chair, Ilmari Tapiovaara 1946
This was Tapiovaara's first chair. He designed it for the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki. If you look at it closely you can see the attention he paid to the details, such as the curved armrests and the shape of the seat which is bent in three dimensions. The short armrestsallow it to be be pulled close to a table, while preserving a comfortable seat. The Domus chair has won the American Good Design Award and received the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1951.
This is the first version, produced by Tapiovaara's own company Keravan Puuteollisuus. It has had a life. At some point someone had upholstered it, which left a series of small holes on the backrest. For the rest the chair is in a very good shape. A beautiful and rare item
