Rare Armchair, Lucien Engels attr. for Gelderland 1964

A fantastic and rare armchair attributed to Belgian, modernist architect Lucien Engels, produced by Gelderland 1964. The construction is reduced to a minimal use of material with a thin steel base and a comfortable rattan seat. The design still looks as modern as it did sicty years ago.

The same model was found in Lucien Engels' home. Not only was he responsible for the magnificently modern architecture, he also designed the interior, including this chair, according to his family. The chair indeed shows many similarities with his other furniture designs.

It is extremely hard to find. The brushed chrome has several superficial usermarks, showing its age. I had the rattan completely restored, exactly like it was. It is still fresh and light. It will obtain a warmer color over time.
