Vilbert chair, Verner Panton, Ikea 1993/34

This chair was created by Verner Panton for Ikea, the company that is famous for its “put together yourself furniture”. Panton designed a chair for them that could hardly have been more simple and clear.
At the same time it must be a hommage to Gerrit Rietveld, whose Crate Chair was the first DIY chair ever designed. Panton’s chair however refers to Rietveld's Red and Blue chair. As the primary colors of De Stijl were applied on Rietvelds house following the X, Y and Z axes, Panton seems to say that when we stray from those axes, the colors become green, purple etc. A poetic statement, genius in all its simplicity.

It was only in production for a short while. This one is still in mint condition; good as new. Worldwide shipping as a DIY chair will be easy
