Rare armchair by Willem Penaat 1938
Straight where possible, curved where needed.
This is a very rare armchair designed by modernist pioneer Willem Penaat in 1938. With its pragmatic construction Penaat aimed to create a kind of basic chair model, or "Typenstuhl" as Erich Dieckmann would call it at the Bauhaus. Penaat never stopped evolving as a designer and so he was both an inspiration for and a contemporary of the younger generation of modernists in the 1920's and 1930's. According to Gerrit Rietveld, Penaat only became younger as he got older.
This chair is in a good, original condition with a beautiful patina. The rope of the seat is broken in the corners, so it was fixed with staples underneath (not visible)
