Rare B55 armchair, Marcel Breuer for Thonet, 1928/29
This model wasn’t very popular in the beginning, so it’s extremely hard to find. This one was produced before 1934, with the early version of the Thonet label. I personally like it a lot. It looks dynamic and it clearly expresses the machine-like aesthetic of the functionalist ideology.
It still has the original eisengarn fabric in a fresh, orange color. The fabric has been restored in the past in a small patch that was sewn in. It was done with attention. Another chair was probably used as a donor to save this one. It is of course a pity that a restoration was nescessary, but in my opinion, it does also show character. Especially with these old pieces. The chair is sturdy and confortable. The wooden armrests have a beautiful patina, all the original screws are present. The frame and the chrome are in an excellent condition. A true icon of 20th century modern history
