Sitzmaschine armchair, Josef Hoffmann, J&J Kohn ca 1905
An icon that has made a significannt impact on the course of both design and art history. Stamped "J&J kohn, Teschen Austria"
Inspired by the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as well as the functionality of the Morris chair. The use of a regular grid and geometric shapes that are both functional and decorative is an evolutionary step towards (Bauhaus) functionalism as well as geometric abstraction in modern art.
Underneath the seat it has some signs of woodworm. We stalled it in a freezer for a month, just to make sure there are absolutely none left. The small feet on the front were missing (often the case). Our restorator did an excellent job making new ones according to the original design. After more than a century the chair is in a museum quality condition. The original pillows do show wear, but it is a rarity that they are still there. This chair was produced by J&J Kohn between 1908 and 1916.
