Two RARE ARMCHAIRS BY WILLEM PENAAT 1938
Straight where possible, curved where needed.
A pair of very rare armchairs designed by modernist pioneer Willem Penaat in 1938. With its pragmatic construction Penaat aimed to create a kind of basic chair model, or "Typenstuhl" as Erich Dieckmann would call it at the Bauhaus. Penaat never stopped evolving as a designer and so he was both an inspiration for and a contemporary of the younger generation of modernists in the 1920's and 1930's. According to Gerrit Rietveld, Penaat only became younger as he got older.
These chairs are very hard to find. They have slightly different proportions. One is a bit wider and lower than the other. Both chairs are is in a good, original condition with a beautiful patina. The rope of the seats is broken in some small places, but they ar still perfectly stable and comfortable
